Description

“Skyscapes” is a series of photographs taken of the sky at sunrise and sunset and then distorted with my Worlds In Figures custom software that uses historic mapping projections. I began an initial version of “Skyscapes” taking photos in the winter near my home in Berlin. I sought out the sky on the rare overcast-free days during this time of year as a way to confront the feelings of sadness that I commonly experience during the winter months. This exercise revealed to me how themes of ownership, public space, and power relate to access to unobstructed skyviews in a city and its effect on mental health. The series has since expanded to year-round photographs that I distort with my Worlds in Figures software.

This photo was taken in Turin, Italy, in the spring of 2024, and warped using the Conic Conformal projection from 1772, which is produced by placing a cone on the Earth and unwrapping it.
